Randy Hall is an American singer, guitarist, and record producer who is best known for collaborating with Miles Davis during the 1980s. Hall helped Davis arrange “The Man With The Horn”, and its title track featured lead vocals by Hall, who also played guitar, synthesizer and celesta on the track.

Hall recently spoke out in response to current events, stating, “I can’t wait to see us champion this and for us all to rise to a greater level of love and togetherness as human beings. I want to make a record that the whole wide world would sing, then go on tour and set the stage on fire!”

The chorus of “A New Way of Love” has a sweet ear-bending harmonic surprise

kissed to life by backup singers Medina Johnson and Patrice “KP” Isley while the

rhythm track gives those mature enough to remember a masterful Barry White

vibration.

The only things this 4-minute single edit lack are a mid-song breakdown, a sexy

(recently featured on the 2019 Miles Davis unearthed-from-the-vault collection

Rubberband).”Come on, brother. Why you holdin’ out on us?”

Randy Hall grew up in Chicago. His first instrument was the piano, but at the age of 13 he switched to guitar, taking lessons from British jazz guitarist Peter Budd. Hall met Miles’s nephew (and future drummer) Vince Wilburn Jr in kindergarten and the two became lifelong friends. Wilburn’s mother Dorothy, was Miles’s sister. The two friends started playing together and at the age of 16 joined a local band called Time, Space and Distance.

That soon gained them a reputation around Chicago and they did session work for local groups, including the Dells. In 1975, Hall went to study music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. When Hall returned to Chicago, he joined a new band called Data, which included Wilburn, bassist Richard Patterson, keyboardist Robert Irving III, and saxophonist Glenn Burris. All of these musicians later worked with Miles Davis, on Davis’ comeback album The Man With The Horn, from which Hall earned a Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental.

Summer is here, which means it’s time for poolside hangs and new music! Slow Lights, an awesome 4-piece band out of the Baltimore area, has been picking up momentum on Spotify with their latest hit Portable Cabana’s. The bands tracks have been getting thousands of streams of Spotify and getting added to a bunch of fan playlists. It’s the perfect time to check them out! Slow Lights formed in 2013. Having written a multitude of original songs, Asa Kurland, teamed up with Felipe Cantuaria, Jason Altomare, Mike Pivik, and Troy Long to bring the tracks to life. Their classic instrumentation is centered around Asa’s acoustic songwriting and smooth indie tone. Slow Lights captures a coulful sound with a mix of rock and roll, funky rhythms, and the feel of an old school big band.

Portable Cabanas really makes you see how the band is described as a combination of rock, pop and horns leaning them to a bit of a jazz influence with a horn section. Portable Cabanas is now on Spotify, you can check it out here. You can also get a free download on Noisetrade. Hope you like it as much as I do! Looking forward to more from them!

Geoff Alpert’s New Album Open Your Heart Will Make You Fall In Love With The Trombone Again

Geoff Alpert’s new album Open Your Heart is one for the ages. It isn’t your average smooth jazz album. It’s a smooth jazz album that has a contemporary vibe, funky tunes, and of course it has Geoff Alpert himself showing off his talent with the trombone! Really making his music stand out of the crowd, and drawing that crowd in!

Although the album is rooted in smooth jazz, Alpert utilizes many different styles, which results in a dynamic and engaging musical fusion.  The album is accessible to many and will appeal to those who love smooth jazz as well as those who love funk, pop and many other styles.  The album features the solo trombone, which is also a refreshing change from the more conventional solo instruments of smooth jazz.

If you haven’t yet, you can listen to the album on iTunes, CD Baby  and Amazon.

Be sure to keep up with Geoff on Facebook, Twitter, Reverbnation and his official website www.GeoffAlpert.com for any updates.

Geoff Alpert’s Smooth Jazz Fusion Album Open Your Heart Impacts Music Scene

It is truly rare to find the kind of dedication and emotional investment in music that Geoff Alpert displays with every note he plays.  After a 30 year hiatus from music when Geoff dedicated himself as a husband and a father, he has returned to the scene and brought with him a groovy smooth jazz based sound that features the trombone and that is making a huge impact on the smooth jazz scene.  Although Geoff’s music contains some very smooth jazz-oriented grooves, he pushes himself to incorporate other genres such as R&B, which results in a beautiful fusion of genres.

Geoff lost his wife to cancer in 2002 and, after soul searching, was motivated to re-join the musical community.  He took the emotion and passion from this loss and, after meeting director Gail Johnson and bassist Darryl Williams, was lead to create a musical statement and image that closely ties to his life story.  Geoff’s passion for the spiritual Eastern Martial Arts discipline is also an integral part of his music and inspiration.

You can listen to the album on iTunes, CD Baby and Amazon.

Be sure to keep up with Geoff on Facebook, Twitter, Reverbnation and his official website www.GeoffAlpert.com for any updates.

My all time favorite smooth jazz bassist Mitchell Coleman Jr. is getting played on the radio all around the country! His new single “Flow” off of his debut solo album “Soul Searching” has jazz and blues fans going crazy. And I don’t blame them, the song is addictive. I’ve been keeping up the charts, and right now Mitchell is #40 on Mediabase’s Smooth A/C chart, #24 on SmoothJazz.com’s Radar Chart, and #1 at The Wave in Cleveland! And let’s not forget the numerous national Smooth Jazz radio stations and Billboard reporting stations that he’s getting played on too. See what everyone’s talking about and check out “Flow” on iTunes.
